BEAUTY RITUALS for Self Care

Posted by Allison Norman on

One of my favorite forms of self-care is DIY beauty rituals. From a simple mashed up avocado face mask to a full Cleopatra bath, nothing speaks to me like a solid night of plant-based, fresh,  local, organic self-care. There's something about making my own personalized beauty products from scratch that makes my soul hum with love and contentment.

Start by smudging with sage or Palo Santo first, then burn some nag champa incense and a candle. Turn the music up and the phone off. Pour yourself a glass of wine or a cup of steamy, cozy tea. Indulge your senses, self-care your body, mind and soul. ∞

Let's start big.

Cleopatra bath: (potentially very messy )
Into a very very hot bath put the following :
•2 cups powdered goats milk
•1 cup sea salts
•1 cup Epsom salts
•1 pound of rose petals ( fresh and organic)
•Essential oils to preference. I do equal parts rose oil and lavender oil.

Method: Soak it up as the goats milk exfoliates and softens,Epsom salt relaxes rose petals pamper and sea salt replenishes. You'll feel  pampered and indulged by this luxurious bath. After you get out lather yourself with a  very generous helping of coconut oil and stay in the nude to  let your dewy silken skin to absorb the oil.

In Bath Body Scrub:
Sea Salt/Olive Oil
This recipe is for a more vigorous exfoliating action while the honey one is a kinder, gentler body scrub.
•1 cup sea salt
•1/2 cup olive oil
Apply during shower, exfoliate body using circular motions, rinse.
Brown sugar/Coconut Oil
•1 cup brown sugar
•1/2 cup warmed coconut oil.
Apply during shower, exfoliate body using circular motions, rinse.
Mocha Mask:
Antioxidants and caffeine. Good for de-puffing, improves circulation, anti-inflammatory.
 •2 tablespoons freshly ground coffee
 •2tablespoons pure cocoa                    .      powder
 •1 tablespoon honey
 •3 tablespoons Greek yogurt
Blend ingredients together in a bowl and slather on face and neck. Leave on 10 minutes. Before washing off add a little water to face and exfoliate.
Avocado Face Mask:
Nourishing, revitalizing, moisturizing, great for oily and dry skin.
•1 fully ripe avocado
•1 tablespoon honey
Mash together and spread on face. Leave on 15 minutes. Rinse off with warm water and pat dry.

Yoghurt Face Mask:
Great for oily skin in Winter. Soothing. Nourishing
•1/4 avocado
•1 teaspoon plain Greek yogurt
Mash together and spread on face. Leave on up to 30 minutes.
Rinse off with warm water and pat dry.

Strawberry Brightening Mask
I love this brightening one for oily skin . Strawberries naturally contain salicylic acid, a product commonly found in blemish creams.
1/4 cup mashed strawberries
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 tablespoon honey
Mash together and slather all over your precious face. Leave on 8-10 minutes. Rinse off with cool water. Gently pat dry.
Beloved Tip that works:
Sometimes I get really bad circles under my eyes . When it happens to me it's stagnant fluid retention that I now have a plan of attack to combat it. First I put a generous dab of castor oil under my eye. Then firmly and gently I make a sweeping motion, directing my dark circles away - sweeping from corner of eyes outward 7 times in each eye. Then I take a spoon that I've had in the freezer and hold it under my eye for as long as I can take. This almost - aggressive combo actually works.
